Club VHS opens at EYE Filmuseum

The old museum shop at EYE has been turned into Club VHS, where you can rent unstreamable DVD’s at the only videotheek (video store) in Amsterdam.

The 1990s and Y2K nostalgia has not been more present than the new video rental store opening at EYE Filmmuseum on 21 May. The old museum shop at EYE has been turned into Club VHS, where you can rent unstreamable DVD’s at the only videotheek (video store) in Amsterdam.

Last summer Ismay and Eli founded the first-ever videotheek at Brughuis in Tolhuistuin and a pop-up store at FC Hyena, where you can scroll through movies without any boring streaming algorithms choosing for you. The two film enthusiasts wanted to draw more attention to movies that are often forgotten by streaming services and deserve to have an audience.

This May, Club VHS opened a new main location at the former shop at EYE where you can talk about movies, rent, and discover something new.  In this way, Amsterdam is starting to build an offline film community as people can come out of their homes, meet others, and talk about obscure movies together.

You can rent a DVD for 2,50€ + a deposit of 5€ and you have two weeks to watch the rented movie. Together with EYE, the rental shop will curate a special shelf that is connected to their programme, making the connection between the filmmuseum special.

Opening hours from 22 May: Every Thursday and Friday: 16:00-22:00

You can browse through their Letterboxd wishlist. If you wish to get more involved, you can email them for volunteering: clubvhs.ams@gmail.com.
