In this Aa Explores, we travel to Frankfurt am Main. At this point, you might think that we choose the cities for this rubric through a random number generator, but listen, by some miracle, not one, but two (!!) members of the Aa team hail from Frankfurt. So, naturally, we felt compelled to make this Aa Explores all about ‘Mainhattan’. You probably haven’t come across a Frankfurt guide yet, but here we are—the first and last one you’ll ever need.
As many of you might resonate with, we all have a love-hate relationship with our hometowns—a sentiment that often turns into more love and gratitude once we have left the nest. Now, with a bit of distance and the wisdom that comes with the ripe age of 22, we’ve concluded that Frankfurt isn’t all that bad. We see it as our duty to share our newfound appreciation with all of you.
If you were to ask anyone worldwide about Frankfurt, the likely responses would revolve around the airport, football, or the skyline—no doubt, significant aspects. However, we’re keen to shed light on a few more facets the city has to offer. Frankfurt unfolds as a lively cultural hub, with stunning museums, theaters, and a diverse culinary scene.
Hessen, the German state housing Frankfurt, is synonymous with a robust regional identity and cultural pride. Given the rich cultural heritage of Goethe, Grüne Soße, and enough Apfelwein (Apple cider) to keep you sipping for a lifetime, it’s understandable.

Without a doubt, the best spot in town for brunch is Mehlwassersalz. Situated in the MMK museum, it’s a bakery and vegetarian bistro, making it the perfect place to kickstart your day. With an emphasis on local ingredients and a weekly changing seasonal menu, you can feel the love put into this place. I would recommend their sourdough and brioche French toast.

They offer a variety of options from halal, vegetarian to vegan. If you are there, do not miss out on their falafel. Hands down properly the best falafel in town.
Weinsinn
Weinsinn is undoubtedly one of my favorite restaurants in the city, with stunning mid-century modern and Bauhaus interiors. But most importantly, they serve amazing European cuisine alongside an extensive wine list. Do yourself a favor and come here when you want to treat yourself to their seasonal tasting menus.

If you’re in the mood for great authentic Sichuan cuisine look no further! The Mapo Tofu and the smashed cucumber salad are a blessing for your taste buds.

Gresso
Gresso is one of my favorite cafés in the city. It’s the go-to spot for a caffeine recharge paired with a cute little snack, and you can people-watch all year round on the terrace. Choose your favorite coffee and don’t miss trying their pistachio croissant.
Café Zweigle
Café Zweigle is a charming café located in the financial district and is the perfect haven for a coffee and a canelé. My advice: come here early in the morning when all the pastries are still warm and set yourself up for the perfect start to your day. If you so happen to have gotten up on the wrong foot, don’t worry the staff is so friendly that you will have a smile on your face guaranteed.
Café Fein
Located next to a charming little park, Fein is an incredibly cute outdoor café. The nostalgic charm and homemade pastries create the feeling of hanging out in a friend’s backyard all year round.
Bunca
Bunca is an artisanal café in the center with house-roasted beans and delicious pastries. Do not skip on their iced coffee, as it is the best in town and pair it with their delicious banana bread.
