Places Remember Events is a beautiful title for a record, and an even better description of what this one does. Listen for a few minutes and you’ll catch traces of melodic electronica from the late nineties and early 2000s, the records people still dig out on slow Sunday mornings, rebuilt with production so clean and sharp it could have been finished last week. Behind it are two names many Dekmantel regulars will know well: Thessa Torsing, who makes music as upsammy, and Luca Mucci, who goes by Piezo. Together they’re Eerie Enterprise, and this is their first album.
Torsing and Mucci had been fans of each other’s work for years when, in July 2024, they finally blocked out two days to mess around on hardware together. Nobody was planning an album. A few of those sketches stuck with them though, and they kept coming back to them over the next year and a half until they had nine finished tracks. Jamming on hardware means you capture whatever happens in the moment, mistakes and all, and all that extra time let them figure out which mistakes were actually the good bits.
As upsammy, Torsing makes music that’s incredibly precise, whether it’s a floaty ambient piece or something for a packed dancefloor, and their 2020 album Zoom came out on the Dekmantel label too. Mucci’s Piezo stuff is messier in a fun way, bass and techno tracks with sharp sounds that swerve off just when you think you’ve worked them out. On Places Remember Events they rub off on each other. Torsing gives Mucci’s wandering a bit of shape, he stops their tidiness from getting stiff, and the whole thing ends up sounding easy and relaxed while still being worth paying close attention to.
Back in the golden era of melodic electronica, people were dreaming up a calm, hopeful future full of clean lines and warm synths. Club music since then has mostly gone harder, faster and more anxious, which can be a thrill and probably says a lot about how everyone’s feeling these days. Eerie Enterprise grabs that older, gentler mood and runs with it anyway. Both of them felt dance music had lost some of its softness, so they made an album that calms you down when most club records would rather wind you up. Then there’s the title, which hints that rooms, streets and dancefloors hang on to what happened in them long after the lights come up, and that the music made there carries a bit of that with it. From two artists who’ve spent years in clubs, on a label that started out as a party, it reads like a little love letter to those places.
It’s been a year of collaborations for both. upsammy released Seismo with Valentina Magaletti on PAN, and Piezo joined DJ Plead and DJ Python as PPP for Bborn Again on Wisdom Teeth. With the album born out of live hardware sessions, Eerie Enterprise has naturally become a live show too, premiering at Dekmantel and SOUNDIT this summer with more dates on the way.
Places Remember Events by Eerie Enterprise is out now on all streaming platforms.
