To mark 65 years of the 1461, Dr. Martens is rolling out a series of limited-edition releases throughout 2026, including a Made in England version in Classic Calf leather ‘sepia grey’, handcrafted in the original Northamptonshire factory.
The 1461 is one of those shoes that you keep seeing, in different places and on different people. It has been worn to school, work, nights out, for things that felt important at the time.
Originally first launched in 1961 as a 3-eyelet work shoe, it didn’t stay only that for long. It was soon picked up by musicians, artists, and across different subcultures, like goths, mods and punks. The shoe ended up on stage, in studios, in everyday routines.
This new 65th anniversary release stays close to that history. Instead of changing the design into something modern, the focus stays on material and construction. The shoe is cut from full-grain Classic Calf leather sourced from Leeds-based tannery C. F. Stead, finished in a ‘sepia grey’ tone created through a mix of natural oils and waxes, designed to develop character over time. The details stay close to what you expect, with the air-cushioned sole, Goodyear welt construction, grooved edges, and the signature yellow welt stitching still in place.
The changes are in the smaller details. Antique gold eyelets replace the standard hardware, the laces come waxed and slightly heavier, and a special-edition swing tag references the Cobbs Lane factory where it’s made. Nothing major has changed in the silhouette, just adjustments that bring more attention to how the shoe is put together.
As Dr. Martens Head of Archive Ramona Riedzewski puts it: “For over six decades, this classic, yet instantly recognisable silhouette has moved far beyond its workwear origins, worn for school, work, interviews, gigs, weddings and every milestone in between.”
It’s interesting to see how a shoe like this can stick around for years without needing major changes, and still feel timeless.
The limited-edition 1461 ‘sepia grey’ is part of Dr. Martens’ 2026 anniversary releases, crafted in England and available in select quantities.
