Most people go into a clothing store during ADE to find something to wear to the next party. At Samsøe Samsøe on Wolvenstraat this week, you might leave with a new favourite artist instead. Samsøe Sound, produced by RIPPLES, has turned the 9 Streets shop into a listening room built around a recording by Latanya Alberto and BNNYHUNNA, and it runs until Sunday 25 October.
If you haven’t come across them yet, you probably will soon. Alberto is a singer and songwriter with Surinamese and Curaçaoan roots who released her debut album SEEN in June, and somewhere along the way found time to open for John Legend and perform with the Metropole Orchestra. BNNYHUNNA learned piano, drums and guitar in church before going off to make his own mix of jazz, gospel, hip-hop and afro. That mix won him an Edison Pop Award for ECHOES OF PRAYER, and PSALM FUNK landed this spring. The pair kicked things off with a live set in the store on the opening day of ADE.
The recording only exists in the store, which gives the whole thing a slightly secret feel. You listen through Nothing headphones, the project’s listening partner, while Vincent Rang’s Wild Clock_01 plays out on LED screens around you. The artwork grows roots, trees and fungal networks in real time and never repeats itself, so if you’re tempted to come back on Saturday, the walls will have moved on without you.
It’s the kind of setup RIPPLES specialises in. The collective builds each experience around one theme and one room, and works hard to blur the line between the people performing and the people watching. On Thursday night the store filled up for a DJ line-up of local names, which is about as far from a quiet afternoon of folding knitwear as a Scandinavian fashion brand gets.
“My music is intended to help people get in better touch with themselves, so that we can form a sense of unity,” says Alberto. “In the same way, Samsøe Samsøe builds a world around fashion, community, art and music, creating the right environment for us to truly see and appreciate one another.”
BNNYHUNNA, who describes his music as obsessed with detail, recognised something familiar in the project. “Something I really noticed at the event Samsøe Samsøe organised together with Ripples is that they share that same ethos and challenge the way people experience things.”
Worth a detour between club nights, especially if your ears need a gentler few minutes.
Samsøe Sound runs until 25 October 2026 at Samsøe Samsøe, Wolvenstraat 31, Amsterdam.
